I wonder if there are not ways to innocculate them gradually to exposure to external pathogens. But I'm biased because I prefer the way Japan reacted to forcibly being opened to the outside world after centuries of isolation. The scale is very different mind you~

… I was trying to remember a science fiction story I read decades ago on this theme (human native of a long-isolated colony planet destroys the spaceship of a later visitor) but then I realized, OMG, the theme was repeatedly used in Star Trek stories around the Prime Directive!
