Can confirm. California wages are used up on California prices. Get you some Ohio wages and they'll go a long way at Ohio prices. Also, you can have your own home, instead of sharing it with 3 other couples.

average tenure for a dev at a FAANG company is about 18 months so that's a reasonable baseline. also, that seems insane to me. these companies churn the shit out of their workers.

pretty sure it's mostly driven by workers themselves. get job that isn't that great (besides pay) at prestigious bigco, use that to get job you like with competitive pay at smallco
