no, that is not what atomization is or means. "having nobody else to please" is just called autonomy or independence. atomization is the destruction of social support institutions (extended family, church, village, union, etc.)

literally every one of those things is a destructive social dominance institution though?

that is not their stated purpose though often through corruption (or just being outgroup) they can behave in that way. compare and contrast with things like police which are created explicitly to be dominance enforcement organizations.

fair, i'm just saying 'atomization destroys the social power of the church as an institution' is not gonna get me to be less in favor of it.

there are lots of problems with churches. i'm not going to overlook the problems. i do, however, want to point out that they have a role to play. sometimes bad things happen to good people. sometimes a person's spouse dies and leaves them bereft and without support.

maybe people can be decent and helpful to each other *without* a structure making them, I mean I see (and throw money to) quite a bit of crowdfunding campaigns for random strangers that aren't in my church/union/guild

and what are the dynamics of those gofundme drives? the only ones I know about are driven by political tribalism (a substitute church, basically) but my knowledge is limited here. do you see total strangers with no binding affiliations of any kind helping each other this way?
