Confucius used nuclear familial relationships as a model for ideal institutions, the Romans to a lesser extent ("pater patriae") but had extremely strong institutional support for (patriarchal) families until the mid empire, eg see pater potestas

It's really hard to generalize like this. Nuclear families existed in Rome in the same sense they've existed in every single human society in history. They weren't the atomic unit of public life the way they were in 1950s America though. It was patron networks and gens.

China (pre-modern?) did not have nuclear families in the sense 1950s America did either. Multi-generational families, village networks, patriarchal relationships, filial piety...it's too different to slap that label on there either.
