My grandfather drove army convoys blind drunk up and down the East Coast, fought bravely in the Ardennes, occupied Berlin, and unwittingly started a secret German family he learned about in his 80s and came to love as dearly as his American clan. Happy Veteran's Day, Grandpa.
That's most of the story. He found out a bit more than a year after his wife died; his German daughter had cancer and was trying to meet her dad. My German cousin and her daughters were able to translate, they did a bunch of transatlantic meets and still keep in touch
