I don't know that this has anything to do with the IDEOLOGY of either group rather it's probably a function of (once more) social ascendancy and saturation when everyone was a jingo and people were hounded for Insufficient Patriotic Fervor or Weird Sex Mores that freaked me out

Or it's what happens when you switch from believing that you have 49% of the voters on your side to believing you have 51% on your side. You stop compromising and start proselytizing. Political speech is now meant to convince the apathetic, not the opposition.
