I once got into a very long debate w/ a guy about this very topic It wasn't because i was pro or con either 'open borders' or 'colonialism'.. but i found the point interesting: why *cant* outsiders just come in, buy all the land, rename the country? Why not?

It seems like there has to be a price But I expect the total value for existing inhabitants collectively exceeds that for the potential new owners pretty generally, and governments are competent to facilitate collective action here So you usually get invasions not buyouts (?)

That actually reminds me of an thing i came across years ago. It was called "Christian Exodus". Dudes wanted thousands of hardcore christians to move to a single small town, take over the govt, and declare a christian mini-state I joined, of course https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Christian_Exodus …

It was basically a chat room. They'd yap incessantly "what will the rules be in Christiantopia" "What's will the flag be" "What denominations were too-weird to be allowed in (mormons)" "Whether they needed an Army" (I insisted on Navy too, even they expected to be landlocked)
