My family, nuclear and extended, have been very good to and for me and I imagine this makes me biased toward families as a mechanism for attaining good social outcomes

It's worth remembering that high liberalism (the social liberalism of the upper classes) has changed a bit since the 90's. There is more of a consensus that divorce is bad, less resistance to the idea that two parents are preferable to one, and so on.

And gay marriage won in good part on picket fence iconology. I guess what I'm saying here is that the social right was pushing back against some pretty bad ideas that have subsequently been quietly moved away from. Leaving them really bad arguments against gay marriage.
