basically you get *one* pin in its “this is the correct depth for /this cut/“ position and you use a bit of torque to hold it there, while you do the next on the other pins.

if the tolerances were perfect you couldnt do this — but they arent so you can find the first binding pin and then do a next one and so forth — *exactly* like how you guess the first character of a password being checked by a non-constant-time compare :)

you do need specialised tools, one tool to manipulate the pins (there’s a variety of possible shapes depending on the kind of lock and also if you want to apply movement to more than one pin at once (technique called “raking”)) and an other to apply torque to the cylinder
