It was just a rear-end accident, a year ago, but the bulging disk in my neck from whiplash still hurts. Doc says it probably will for the rest of my life. The body is much more fragile than we think.

I empathize. I was broadsided in a high-speed car chase - by the guy being chased, I mean - and I have the same problem. And the doctor told me the same thing. "When will this get better?" "Well, never, and it will probably get worse." "Oh."

I thought doctors could fix just about anything, especially something relatively minor like this. It's not bad enough to risk surgery, but it just aches and burns most of the time. I'm not nearly as judgmental of opioid users (not abusers) as I was.

Yes, it's that strange, buzzing burn (especially in cold weather) that really wears you down. I find myself angrier at opioid abusers because I now know how necessary and helpful a sensible pain regimen can be.
