In practice this means most things work badly and visitors never know whether any given interaction is bad due to incompetence or due to the fact they're being screwed So far my hotel nearly refused me a room because I didn't have a dead tree copy of a voucher, and . . .

. . . I have no idea when or if I will get the toiletries I just asked for at the front desk. "Housekeeping will bring it up." To charge me more? I can't just . . . have a shitty razor and one of those singe-use toothpaste packets? What is going on?

Everything exchange is a scaled-down isomorph of contemporary MTA efforts to extend the subway Think I'm going in unshaven with some mint gum Apologies to my interviewers in advance

Update! A nice man arrived with two toothbrushes, two razors, and no toothpaste "I don't need two" "No problem!" Have a feeling this will be on the bill

What do you think of life in the midwest?
-
Slow, dreamlike, a place out of time Maybe it's just that I grew up there Or that every time I go back it's transitory and almost liminal Holidays, relatives ailing, births, deaths Things that matter? Home?

Oh yeah Chicago sort of manages it too but it seems in a deeper state of decay Sort of a failed megacity, like a brown dwarf Never quite hit fusion

heh, depends where upstate (certain areas are incredibly surreal), but yeah eventually it reverts back to "regular 'merica" as you head north

I’m from NYC originally, and spent the first year after I moved away constantly tripping over all the little assumptions I had about how things work which apply there, but nowhere else. Even LA is like a parallel dimension; all the rhythms are different.
