i feel weirdly capable of putting myself in both kavansdfskfghs position and also in whatsername's position except that i honestly will never seek any kind of public role because I can imagine this playing out in exactly the same way it did for him, I have thought about this

and, switching positions, if I were ever asked to testify to the character of this one particular person were they up for office or w/e, I wouldn't, I just wouldn't i havent seen any kind of justice or retribution and i don't care to there's nothing to be gained for me

my hunch is that this is in a class of crimes that are just very challenging to deal with effectively, and often the best solution is for participants to remove each other from one another's (but I need to think about this too) but its just really difficult! and . . .

there's an important role for criminal courts here, and it roughly (if hardly costlessly) worked as intended in my case in criminal courts, there's at least a _chance_ for evidence to be presented systematically, and a high threshold for punishment but this role is *limited*

so---- thinking about this mechanistically, what is the aim of a public congressional hearing? what do we hope to accomplish? no matter how I turn this, I cant see these proceedings as being a good mechanism for either (i) revealing truth, or (ii) resolving conflict
Show this thread -
Maybe a separate investigation reveals some novel information (kind of doubt it but) But not a public hearing with huge stakes on the outcome. Just perfectly structured to incentive everyone to obfuscate and distort. And as a means of resolving conflict--it draws in Everyone!

And no one is going to be helped here. This is now the defining story for both people for the rest of their lives. Political operatives who (pushed?) her to come forward, if she didn't particularly want to and even then, have probably wrecked her life. Kavanadhdhfgh is done too

I guess I just hate everyone who decided to take advantage of a shit situation for a passing political advantage Not much insight here in the end I guess Idk Stay safe out there, pals

As someone who can easily see both sides of THE THING, it's really just a shitty position for either of them to be in. I was a thoroughly inveterate shitheel in my teens and early adulthood, and I am very thankfully not that person now, so that factors in.

If her allegation were within to the past decade or 2, I think it would bear more on me, even with the ambiguities, but with a 36 year old allegation that can't be defended, I just don't know what to do with it besides occasionally snark about it & let people vote how they feel
-
But it's very much NOT lost on me that this is a common outcome for legitimate sexual assault cases, and that's tragic. I don't know how to logically deviate from a high standard for proving guilt, but it really has to suck to be a victim of a statistically low-evidence crime.
-
It does suck I'm sure experiences vary, natch Maybe helpful to not look at criminal courts as a reliable means of obtaining Justice in most senses Sometimes they deliver that, but I don't think that's the primary function or the modal outcome
-
"Justice" lives in the inherent tension with the idea that it is more noble to let a hundred guilty men go free than one innocent man be deprived of liberty, which underscores the whole "innocent until proven guilty" notion that America was founded on. But yeah, It often sucks

Going to have to capture this.

I think processing things cognizantly is good, but it's not a method that works for everyonehttps://twitter.com/polytrophic/status/1045745716340170753?s=19 …
