curious what did a person have to do to get a bronze star in ww2? my grandfather has one but also he doesnt talk about the war much and man that sure seems like something you dont just ask someone about

I've never tried this, but it seems that (some) older military records (pre-1956) are available to the public, though some small fees may apply: https://www.archives.gov/personnel-records-center/ompf-access-public … The text of your grandfather's award citation may be available.
