the generics are on wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bronze_Star_Medal#General_information …) but yeah I'm not sure how you would set up to ask that question

I'm just straight up not going to he tells a horrific story every decade or two and they're enough to just make you not want to ask for more

I've never tried this, but it seems that (some) older military records (pre-1956) are available to the public, though some small fees may apply: https://www.archives.gov/personnel-records-center/ompf-access-public … The text of your grandfather's award citation may be available.

Oh huuuh. That somehow seems invasive too? Maybe someday after he passes, although when I write *that* it seems ghoulish Ugh

My dad carried a dying man through a firefight/bombardment about a football field in length to get his in Vietnam.
-
At the end of the story, the guy died. Yeah, wow. And it haunts my dad to this day, along with people he finally told me he knows he killed. I have a very conflicted relationship with The Military.

just hire someone to ask him how many of his friends he saw die gruesome deaths and anything you do will seem polite in comparison

Don't ever ask why. I asked why and it's why I'll never join any armed forces or work for any military contractor.

I'm grateful to your grandfather for his service. Everyone is different and you're a better judge of what's appropriate here, but some of my greatest regrets involve not asking more questions and/or listening better to older family members (now gone) relating their experiences.

It’s interesting that we’ve created a proxy so we don’t have to ask but that same thing also invites reason to ask.
