even in modern times the US (the world) has been through some Shit and none of that seemed to be accompanied by a--I don't know, systematic dissolution of small-scale society, of families and friendships our natural and Meaningful choiceless bonds

when I read about social disasters--Totalitarianism in Russia or China, say--and hear that children reported their parents, or friends condemned each other for crowds, it feels like a kind of blasphemy; a violation of something sacred and more especially evil than simple murder

There is often assumed to have a been a silent majority in Germany during the rise of Nazism - eventually, these people, complacent in the situation, and believing that it would all blow over, were sucked up into it themselves, whether they wanted to be or not.

I don't disagree with you - I've lost some friends over this whole thing, too, or at least, more or less have - but for me, it's a bit of a reverse. I live in a very red rural area, I am not a conservative. My ideas piss of everyone around me, thus I become an invalid

I guess I don't know where I'm going with this, but I'd just like to say that I think it's important that we be vigilant about the kinds of ideas we respect in the forum that is our society, because I fear we really aren't ever that far away from very terrible things

yeah, agree I think or maybe more like: think of society as an ecosystem things get shitty, bad ideas that always lurk on the edges start gaining a competitive edge I guess in this framing my expectation is that cutting friend and family ties is not likely to set things aright

It probably won't, but neither will keeping those ties alive if it means subjecting yourself to psychological or emotional harm. How can a person that holds themselves to high ethical standards abide beliefs in others that contradict those ethics? It is a very difficult thing

let me refer you to my unpublished manuscript on why stated political views should not be conflated with virtue (or vice) in nearly all cases :) assume this arguendo; then you can simply judge your friends on the basis of their private conducthttps://twitter.com/eigenrobot/status/1037042644432642049 …

I don't mean any of this to say that you should stay in relationships that are harmful to you: not a bit, and absolutely the opposite. But I'm skeptical that abstract and usually-superficial beliefs are themselves a typical cause of harm in otherwise-healthy relationships.
