I don't have strong opinions about the policies in question generally however people can reasonably disagree in good faith about the likelihood of different outcomes of a policy or its absence or alternatives this seems uncontroversial
even agreeing on probabilities they can disagree about the value of different outcomes without being monsters people have different social aesthetics perhaps you disagree, in which case good luck in your effort to subjugate everyone who doesnt share your precise taste in mores
none of this is novel, Certain People have been pleading the belligerents to lay down their arms with these words since the war broke out I dont know maybe OP is dumb but it more reads like shes not even trying just "heres todays rationale for why the outgroup is irredeemable"
what's especially dispiriting I guess is that she's explicitly justifying people cutting ties with their friends and family right there in the tweet not straight up calling for it, but that's the implication that seems to be spelled out through the thread, if you buy her ideas
this hits me personally, for sure I've lost very close people who won't talk to me because I want to sit out the culture wars. It's their life now and I don't understand it, and I think I fear what it might represent or portend
even in modern times the US (the world) has been through some Shit and none of that seemed to be accompanied by a--I don't know, systematic dissolution of small-scale society, of families and friendships our natural and Meaningful choiceless bonds
when I read about social disasters--Totalitarianism in Russia or China, say--and hear that children reported their parents, or friends condemned each other for crowds, it feels like a kind of blasphemy; a violation of something sacred and more especially evil than simple murder
I guess what I'm trying to say is, contra OP, please be kind to your friends and neighbors and family and loved ones, even and especially the ones who are Wrong and Bad sans that I'm not sure there's anything left for Policy to save /finhttps://twitter.com/eigenrobot/status/879352273976950786 …
sorry if i'm misreading your posts or hers (in which case i'll gladly delete) but it seems like she's specifically talking about and criticising cases of people who ignore or severely downplay (via literal wishful thinking) the net costs of policies
no you're fine! and thank you. I guess I'm saying: "and even if they are . . ." being Wrong, and even Bad in public life, is a terrible reason to cut off friends and family and remember the Philosopher's wisdom: none of us is free of sin
Hmm, I found the specific error described interesting. I'd never heard it put so clearly before, & it seems a nice parallel to common economic mistakes - zero sum view of trade, etc. But yeah, extrapolating to "therefore throw away your friendship w/ outgroup members" is Dumb.
oh thank you! spread the good word :)
Alternative interpretation. We ought not trust any agent to implement a policy competently, with humane discretion.
Laws are much too detailed and particular as an attempt to reduce the agency of law enforcement and make them more mechanistic. This is a n overcorrection in the wrong direction. What we ought to do is make laws much more vague and requiring of discretionary judgement to enforce.

Abolish policy
To me this seems like one of the best arguments not to cut the ties, by delivering a better explanation than 'they're evil' for supporting a policy viewed as bad.
Also, the entire thread posits that some people generally underestimate the net harm of policies, not that there is no tradeoff or even disagreement? Perfectly compatible in my eyes.
