maybe "%group x vs %group y" is just a meme now and well never be free of it until a new age when arda's scars are healed idk

i am mildly curious about the discrepancy, perhaps the pubs further down the list proactively seek out a gender-balanced photo portfolio? which if so, one wonders about the forces that drive that or just if theres %gender reenforcement at some organizations or types of them

depressing tho kind of an interesting empirical question here but theres just zero chance that it will be addressed positively, or honestly in some kind of feynmanian sense just gonna be people casting around for narrative/normative culpability welcome to the Discourse robot

I know a girl who’s a fashion photographer in a developing country. She gets a lot of attention for being one of the few women. I thought it was a joke when I first heard that. In fashion?
-
that actually doesn't surprise me! i hung out with the local hobby photography (fashion photography?) set for a while a few years ago and it occurs to me it was overwhelmingly men shooting and women modeling (gratis on both counts)
-
It wasn’t even presented to me as a glass ceiling problem - the editors and producers at the fashion magazines I know there are women and are always looking for female photogs. Basically, I didn’t realize photography was so geeky.
-
hmm fashion photography might suck for het women, think of the effect of the intrasexual competition on your self-image imagine being surrounded all day by high-status attractive sexy dudes (assuming you're straight, plausibly this doesn't hold if not)
-
Just because a guy photographs well does NOT make him high value or attractive in real life. And being around those kinds of men does not lower a woman’s self esteem, why would it?
-
oh no!--was thinking of the scenario: men taking photos of men substantially more conventionally attractive than they are I have no idea how status hierarchies, implicit or not, play out among other homosocial groups; was taking a stab at extrapolating from case of straight men
-
I have to wonder how many male photographers doing men’s - or women’s - fashion (besides the ones with an ironic bent, like Terry Richards) are straight.
-
huuuh, that's a good question too hard straight vs bi / gay work differentials within genders and across professions are maybe almost more interesting than the case where you don't do the subgroup analysis sadly bereft of insight consequence my conventionality here

The women I know who are interested in photography see it as a means of personal artistic expression, not as a craft. That could be part of it.
-
yeah, I can imagine that hmmm hmmmm work as expression vs work as craft is maybe a big unseen division in motivation and it wouldnt surprise me if the inclination was unevenly divided across genders, maybe even dramatically

Handling heavy equipment, anticipation and spacial awareness, sometimes just foot-speed or muscle to get in position and to hold one's ground; you know where I'm going with this.

They should do Instagram influencers next.
-
