as a Singaporean I often forget that the USA is big enough that immigration would affect different regions differently

OH! omfg
well i imagine the people who leave from the midwest for the coastal cities are typically drawn there *because* of the liberal big city values?
That’s a big part of it, but many of them are also just looking for economic opportunity.
right... so im from a fairly rich city in my region, and my sense is that people who come here from around the region for economic purposes... generally recognize that the culture is “superior” (for said economic purposes) and typically are interested in it by proxy
my dad is actually a funny case study. refuses to take on singaporean citizenship but has very clearly gotten used to singaporean culture and gets frustrated whenever he goes home. that said he’s frustrated everywhere he goes so im not sure how helpful this story is

occasionally youll hear people say “sg is a great place to make money and its really safe and clean but its too high pressure to raise a family in”... but i do think its accurate that people who come here mostly get infected by some of the good parts of the values/culture
