Many self-proclaimed centrists present as clearly partisan, but seem unaware of the fact. I suspect this is because they unconsciously equate centrism with balance, and instinctively work to prop up what they perceive as the weaker side. Or possibly they’re just in denial.

saying "political moderates" (imaginary category) are not actually "moderate" (i.e. between two positions) is actually good and important. "15% of people are extreme in a seemingly ideologically inconsistent way" is much more polite than what I'd say about 'em.

well you see it's only a dream. the monster is the fevered hallucination of our young princess. everywhere she goes she sees this thing in her mind. our young princess suffers greatly under this burden until she finds her voice and fights back.

the more she stands on a street corner with a megaphone shouting rabid abuses at strangers the more she is able to cope with her hallucinations. eventually she has attracted a large enough of crowd of admirers that she is offered a sinecure at the most prestigious institution.
