The best monocausal explanation I've heard for this is Genghis Khan and successors rampaged everywhere else in Eurasia but were stopped by happenstance from wrecking western europe, so everyone else was set back while whitey chillaxed and burned witches.

In the subsequent centuries Japan grew while China stagnated (falling behind Japan in GDP per capita around 1700); I assumed that was supposed to be (weak) evidence in support of the theory.

As I said, if saying a place was screwed because he wrecked all their trading partners and near competitors is not much of an ad-hoc bandaid. I'm not saying the Genghis is the great satan, I just think it's fun that there's such a simple explanation that comes close to working.
