I want to go to grad school primarily because I feel self-conscious about not having gone already. I'm lower status than those who have, and I know it & hate it. Is this a bad reason to go? "Yes" OK, that's the official answer, but *really* is it? How will I feel in 20yrs time?

Oh wow, unironic engagement. OK, Masters. Um... Biology? Bioinformatics? Genetics? I'm currently working as a software developer but want to move domain to what's by far the most momentous computer program of all, the Human Genome. Now please, tell me how much of an idiot I am...

(Actually the domain isn't "the human genome" but biology in general - how genes construct & maintain organisms. It's like the allure of functional programming to someone only familiar with object-oriented, times twenty, *and* it literally runs us!)

Ok so. Don't do a bio PhD, ever. For an MS program, look at the set of jobs you could get with the degree and your current skillset. Check out what schools offer a closely-related program that would let you do a capstone that would serve as a good portfolio piece for those jobs.

If you wanna just learn stuff, ask people on Twitter what's good--there are a lot of wet science folks into this stuff, and if you can handle coursework you can pick up MS level material on your own anyway.

A more direct career path is applying to dev jobs at biotech firms. They exist, and there will be more of them soon. And learning in situ is a lot cheaper than paying $120k plus two years salary
