And that stereotype is also gendered and raced. Hence the problem for some of us who aren't white and male.

but you're saying it's largely accurate that if I wear fancy clothes you're going to think I'm not a serious academic. That's the problem, not whether or not you're going to stop me from buying the clothes.

I can't expend any more energy trying to help you see what you're saying. Thanks for engaging politely with me. FYI I put myself through college working full time, did grad school w/o any parental support, and worked as an adjunct before TT. And cost was not part of the point.

I always wonder how to deal with such interactions. The best response seems to be to resort to using twitter in protected mode only, or to leave it altogether, because the annoyance often outweighs the benefits of reaching out to fellow minds.
