it seems likely that this will have a few effects dumb people or disinterested people might be swayed, absent pushback from an opponent attentive or opposed people will correctly judge you to be acting dishonestly and dishonorably, and be likely to discount your other claims

people in your ingroup will feel obliged to defend your stupid fucking argument when its inevitably (correctly) attacked as dumb by outgroup folks, making them complicit in your Sin the outgroup will feel obliged to respond with their own dumb arguments prisoners dilemma style

tbh i am more frustrated when folks i agree with do this than those i disagree with, presumably because I subconsciously feel like they should know better (or i have more confidence that a less dumb argument can be used for the same ends)
-
yes! same. It makes it easier to pattern match my good arguments into "yeah bullshit we've hear this song and dance"

sometimes i do this as a way to signal contempt for an interlocutor

do you have an example
-
Um this fell out of some social discussions with an extreme (someone) who just kind of expressed preferences for things then free-form waved (their) hands at "studies" Other example off the top of my head: "the economy grows more quickly under presidents of Party X"
-
it does, that's why party X has been replaced by the REPTOIDS

is this about the library thing (sorry to bring it down to the object level)
-
what no although maybe now that you mention it
-
the library thing bugs me because there is zero daylight between 'this thing is good' and 'this thing should be funded by the government' and being against the latter is universally considered being against the former and it just angries up the blood
-
'this thing is good', so we must procure all the resources of the earth toward creating as much of it as possible make the world into a library of babel it will be a better place
-
this, but unironically

If they’re arguing in response to your claim(s), this is a “permission to treat them as a hostile witness?” moment. They aren’t engaging in good faith. If not, then it’s a rhetorical issue that I’m no good at ;(

this is kinda what i was trying to get at when I was ragging on people for using the (to paraphrase slightly) "you're attributing bad actions to the outgroup, you must be motivated by mere tribalism" heuristic a while back
