which basically amounts to a tradeoff between overfitting your model to the training data (low bias, high variance) and overgeneralizing (high bias, low variance)

so, considering political ideologies as attempts to optimize the global utility function: - communism/central planning/nanny state overfits; you include special cases in the state for every little problem and injustice

- libertarian left can be seen as a regularized left, where you would still like to solve every little problem and injustice but you have strong restrictions on the form of your state preventing it from impinging on personal liberties

- authoritarian right is also in the middle but regularizes very differently from libertarian left. they more or less explicitly accept bias (suboptimal outcomes for those who don't fit the cultural mold). this can be seen really clearly in the way nrx/gnon talk about things
