Gman: "Hey boss, how about instead of doing (thunderingly dumb thing x) we do (obviously needed thing y)? It's would save an estimated 15 man hours weekly and has no associated costs." I should have kept my mouth shut, now they're threatening to make me management.

You're allowed to say no. If you say yes, go here to learn how to be a manager: https://www.manager-tools.com/get-started Management is a specific skill set that everyone thinks they have but they actually don't. But it is trainable. That site will train you.

Thanks for that link. I'm really not a fan of the concept, but it's becoming increasingly clear that the only thing worse than The Other Guy doing it is when no one tries to step up.

Biggest thing about management that engineers etc don't get: It's a job, and the job is not "to be in charge". The job is "do what's needed to ensure your directs are performing well and will stay with the company". Performance and retention of your directs. That's it.

I had some fun and also got a lot of satisfaction from being Senior Patrol Leader for a couple of years, I'm not sure that experience is replicated anywhere though maybe low-level COs? hm
