okay I'm hopping into a 5e Shadowrun campaign any advice on toon building? I understand that survival rates are perhaps Lower than might be expected in medieval games

a Mage is still a Mage, but in D&D the other guy is a dickhead with a pointy stick whereas in Shadowrun the other guy is an armored cyborg with a decapitated dragon's head grafted onto his arm as a weapon.

wtf i like tabletop now

dang my PHB is coming tonight and I am Extremely excited to read through these class possibilities
-
That's the best part; no strict class roles! Also, I love that the robot playing a cyberpunk game goes with the most human option. We roleplay what we aren't.
-
iiiiiiinteresting I see mages and AIs almost . . . as fulfilling a certain similar role in stories? technology <=> magic thematically?
-
Ehh, it's more that Shadowrun considers changing the human form as diminishing magic, thus making technology opposed to magic. The more you augment, the less essence(/humanity?) you have, so they're in competition. There's some interesting ideas at the juncture of the two though.
-
Also, if you wanna expand on magic v AI, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts. If you mean wish fulfillment/power fantasies, I get what you mean. I somewhat sympathize with the "Strong AI=rapture of the nerds" philosophy.

being gimped compared to dnd isn't really much of a downside. dnd mages break the game at high level

I have the least experience with mages, unfortunately. They're not as OP as Wizard vs Fighter in old editions of DnD, but I don't know how they play compared to other characters. I assume you mean caster more than adept type?
