yeah one reason I rarely get rid of books is to make sure that our kids can read as much as they want, I've been stockpiling with the aim of paying it forward been amusing to start unpacking wife's books though, lottttta duplication this is probably a good sign actually

-
come to think of it, depending on our lifestyle in twelve or fifteen years this might be a year of our kids' curriculum

Got mine 15 years ago. $40 for the set at a tiny bookstore. They're the only books that have a permanent spot on my desk.pic.twitter.com/1aHigoXtJt

such a high-value use of $40 (plus god knows how many hours reading but even so)

My parents had the Harvard Classics series and an OG set of Sandberg's Lincoln bio... similar memories, marginally different small upper Midwestern provincial town
-
I bought a similar set from an estate sale for a $1 when I was broke, eating Ramen noodles and could barely afford gas to go to a Library. Great American Thinkers, the Works of Shakespeare, The Philosophers of Democracy. Great companion during a hot summer.
