Extremely pleasant skin feel when the weave is good, nice and even and cool. I like linen too in hot weather, and wool of all kinds, but good cotton's my favorite for skin contact and sheets Except feet natch, hardcore wool insistence there

there are some great synthetic fabrics that have a sort of 3d structured mesh waffle weave on the inside and a flat weave on the outside that I think have better skin feel

The only problem with cotton is the poor durability, but I guess that doesn't matter since clothes are cheap to make now. (Maybe not cheap to buy, tho.) IIRC 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)benzoic acid is a decent silk substitute but spun artificial fibers are bigger than natural cotton.

And obviously bigger fibers make for stiffer fabrics. That's why polyester is considered stiff and uncomfortable despite cellulose being more rigid than terephthalate polyesters.
