Ah yes, the famously non-cruel crown of Castile whose religious ceremonies involved burning people alive.https://twitter.com/eigenrobot/status/1010951151418667008 …

one of my conclusions when reading 1491's section about the Inca was "holy shit I am glad Pizarro destroyed this unholy system before they discovered the wheel" https://twitter.com/NAChristakis/status/1010759166997291008 …

That’s good. Earlier I saw a thread by a guy called Tradical and his fans *do*.

I just feel there is a reluctance to admit the quantity of human sacrifice that went on in civilizations that still exist. People even softball Roman human sacrifice, even though there’s a massive famous book about it (the golden bough).

To be fair about Castile, also, those were technically *executions* as punishment for crime. A bit of a difference between that and human sacrifice.

There was no distinction between religious practice and state rule under Castile. That’s our modern Western Imperialist gaze. ;P

But yes, Castile viewed cannibalism & human sacrifice as unclean and forced their victims to it (including forcing parents to eat their own children) while Aztecs saw it differently. But if you believe in objective morals, their views don’t matter.
