*goes to the east coast once*
-
but this is a joke right? europe has been wall-to-wall assholes for a million years and they’re never gonna stop _because_ it’s their culture
-
even as a Minnesotan I don't think the East Coast is rude--just Ask v Guess culture issues probably, different conventions of politesse and Europe has had all sorts of crazy codes of conduct and politesse for ages! chivalry chrissakes! even brutality wore a velvet glove
-
this is an illuminating divide I don’t think being polite or having certain codes of behavior means you’re not an Asshole (e.g. the English) but then again I am incurably Californian
-
yes perhaps codes of conduct and communication norms at least serve as a tax on antisocial behavior, by restricting the dimensions along which it can be carried out? Californians can be impossibly dickish too you know! you might be shocked by your crassness in Minnesota :)
-
oh god absolutely "the rules do not apply to me" imagine 40 million people who are convinced beyond any possible persuasion they are Special

This seems hard to square with the Dawn to Decadence, Decline & Fall, Spenglerian, etc. theory that "vigorous" barbaroi chawbacons who spit into cuspidores and talk like sailors build vigorous cultures.
-
Barbarians have exquisite codes of politesse that are simply different than our own! Contrast with the deliberate violation of known codes.
