this was admirable IMO. sort of an anti-skin in the game --- where you have every incentive to behave badly, but act with virtue.

(To take a weird twist, I think this "credible display of integrity" is how stable civilizations &c often form --- a chief can benefit greatly by defecting to the other side, or w/e, but takes the risk on virtue and, by chance, wins out, leading to a founding myth of virtue.)
