Ok totally amateur musings about North Korea I think a pivot to the international system makes a lot of sense for Kim, and to the extent this happens it's probably a loss for Chinese regional hegemony And so maybe this is good for American global power, if you're into that

1. North Korea has nukes and they're probably safe from international military intervention at this point. 2. Major threat to Kim regime is likely internal instability. Opening up _economically_ might mitigate this, without the family having to sacrifice too much control.

I think the economic instability came from US sanctions and Chinas cooperation. To me, this is a dog and pony show so NK can gracefully get back to something more normal without looking like they gave up to the NK people. KJU wants 1) money 2) power 3) to stay alive

yeah, that's my guess too probably he's playing against two main threats: (i) internal, and I know nothing about those but I'm sure they exist; (ii) Chinese intervention, possibly via (i) (??????? incredibly speculative)
