I am sorry to drag someone I've never met but the most boring people I know fixate on sets of traits associated with Success and talk about such things constantlyhttps://twitter.com/APompliano/status/1005784785954967552 …

The most successful people I've met: 1. Read constantly 2. Workout daily 3. Are innately curious 4. Have laser focus 5. Believe in themselves 6. Build incredible teams 7. Admit they know very little 8. Constantly work to improve 9. Demand excellence in everything they do

This is called prestige bias. It's a driver of human cultural evolution. Many such cases. http://humancond.org/analysis/bias/prestige …

Indeed. But many times we don't know what will happen if we build a bamboo control tower, so perhaps it's worth a try.

It's a reasonable heuristic, much better than trying things at random, and usually better than relying too heavily on your own reasoning and ability to predict.

this does seem like a reasonable heuristic and it breaks down badly here and I'm not sure why but I bet the reason is interesting hmmm

Boyd and Richerson cultural evolution theory is very cool. Idea is we have social instincts that support cultural evolution, mainly conformity and prestige. Conformity is the cultural analog of DNA repair. If you are alive, things are not too bad, so just keep on doing it.
