"if I can do these things I read about in this mass-market Business Section Airport Book I too will Successful" is well, essentially like the PUA people, except for drones who desperately want to be Power Executives rather than incels who hope to be Pussy-Slaying Sex Players

More charitable take: powerless people are exploited by those who promise power in the same way that men without social skills are exploited by those who promise social acceptance. Both represent ignorant, futile attempts to relieve existential frustration.

the only truly unforgivable thing about eating disorders is how unbearably tedious they make people because they stop being able to think about anything else for five minutes these people are the same but for bonsaiing their lives not their bodies

I wonder if it's the same root Sort of desperately wanting to be someone else and hacking at superficialities rather than the deep things that cause them to be who they are? Or wanting to change an outcome without changing the self? Anyway, extremely Virgin in the deep sense

"wanting x to be what gets you the thing you want, and then maximizing x" runs very deep i see it in lotsa stuff even stuff like fitness, sure, it is good but you can absolutely be ripped and have "run and hide" as your full social repitoire & people can tell, man

Indeed. But many times we don't know what will happen if we build a bamboo control tower, so perhaps it's worth a try.

It's a reasonable heuristic, much better than trying things at random, and usually better than relying too heavily on your own reasoning and ability to predict.

this does seem like a reasonable heuristic and it breaks down badly here and I'm not sure why but I bet the reason is interesting hmmm

Boyd and Richerson cultural evolution theory is very cool. Idea is we have social instincts that support cultural evolution, mainly conformity and prestige. Conformity is the cultural analog of DNA repair. If you are alive, things are not too bad, so just keep on doing it.

swinging towards serious for just a moment. the lists are silly because they're confusing prescriptive advice ("do this") with descriptions of success ("they did this"). cart leading the horse, etc.
