I am not a vegetarian and I'm not sure they're ethically correct but I have a lot of contempt for people who go out of their way to express contempt for vegetarians and more generally for the class of people who respond to shame at virtue in others with abuse

What's your ethical view on it? I didn't become one because of ethics but logically I think they're sound. Animals are pretty universally considered sentient, and it does seem a *little* messed up to kill them when there are alternatives.

Also have you seen how chicken companies treat the farmers+animals? Kinda messed up even without the killing.

it took me a bit to find, but this is a great thread where @MorlockP explains his philosophy toward raising animals for meat, as well as the butchering process https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12654732 …

"It is wonderful, however, to not merely know that the animals are being treated well, but to watch them every day, enjoying their animal lives: chickens pecking at the pumpkins and squash we grow and feed them, pigs rolling around and enjoying themselves in the mud,"

His perspective on rural farming being okay confounds me just a little—speaking as someone who watched the process happening a bunch as a kid. (Grew up in insanely rural area.)

Personally, I couldn't even stand killing raccoons that were destroying things in the garden—the actual farm animals' deaths—ones I or my friends had a hand in raising—made me want to vomit. It never really gets less messed up.

I think how you cope varies by personality and also by level of necessity.

I think when you do it enough you get to a point where you feel more okay killing other things. Coincidental, maybe, but the only people wanting to shoot gays in my area were ones who had done rural farming for years.

someone talked about this in the context of the rwanda genocide something about people who'd used machetes against animals for years found it natural to turn them to their neighbors give it low weight as evidence but it did spring to mind

Killing in general is a very numbing process. Even just observing it will change you, unless the thing was killed for a justifiable reason that wasn't just "I need money." Think self-defence or defence of others.

I think one of the core points of Omelas is that modernity has not eliminated brutality, but rather redistributed it. (That said I do think, with low-to-moderate certainty, that the absolute amount of brutality is less now)

I thought Omelas was about how readers, maybe humans, are too much of a bunch of anti-perfection assholes that they can't tolerate real to backsides utopia

Interesting, I read it has having two main points: 1) Utilitarianism feels intuitively wrong. Grapple with that, reader. 2) Think about how your current life is similar to Omelas — how is your own flourishing supported by suffering that is just out of sight? Is it worth it?

(gets troll fox mode on) how is 1) true, given than the people walking away from Omelas aren't most of them? does utopia break your intuitions too or (am ok with accepting 2) as its point and a valid question)

hm, both the people in the story and that in general, we take for granted real people that got teletransported into Omelas would mostly stay there, not leave, right?

It's hard to examine Omelas-world from a practical perspective, rather than as an elaborate metaphor / narrative thought experiment, because my suspension of disbelief starts going crazy immediately. But yeah, I think people are fine with sufficiently distant suffering
