On th' Twitters and in the culture war trenches more generally, it has been distressing to feel the waves of rage and wonder if they were talking about me. But I'm getting over that. I am more optimistic. Think this is partly my being older, having seen political storms before

Optimistic in what sense? Accepting that it all just has to play out is a far cry from having a positive outlook about the future...

Yeah I absolutely agree that no one is in control but it doesn't make me feel much better. I'll say it's honestly nice to hear any sincere optimism nowadays, just knowing thoughtful people have hope assuages some of my cynicism.

Optimistic in that I don't see civil war looming, or any of those apocalyptic scenarios that ppl seem to almost wish would come about so that they can get on with the meaningful heroic post-apocalyptic lifestyle.

The current "everything is terrible" sentiment seems to revolve mainly around the current political realignment. These have happened before, and only one civil war so far. What else is terrible?

@Peter_Turchin theory of elite over production, which goes some way to explain the desperation of the chattering classes. He predicts it will get worse before it gets better. But what actually is so terrible if you don't listen to all the people stirring up outrage?2 replies 0 retweets 2 likes -

There is something actually bad and rather new going down in US away from the urban hotspots. People are dying because they are no longer useful.https://morecrows.wordpress.com/2016/05/10/unnecessariat/ …
