A common question for political scientists and China scholars: how can we answer important but politically sensitive questions about, say, military decision-making? In the new APSA CP newsletter, I argue that drawing more deeply on history can help:

Shocking details in this damming interview with a Wuhan ICU doctor: - National health experts set ridiculously strict criteria for diagnosing coronavirus cases against all advice - 40 medics infected in a hospital considered a low figure - In one ICU, 2/3 medics infected

“The Wuhan coronavirus spreading from China is now likely to become a pandemic that circles the globe, according to many of the world’s leading infectious disease experts.” Highly infectious, similar to a flu, but we won’t khow deadly it is for a while.

Thoughtful thread on the / Taiwan kerfuffle. Very much second this point - the individual in question was borderline doxxed based on assumptions (not evidence) regarding her job responsibilities.

Scientific paper: travel restrictions failed to stop the spread of H1N1. Look, I get it. Travel bans seem like an intuitive way to halt spread. But all the evidence from similar epidemics shows that the benefits are minimal and the risks are enormous.

I think this meant well, but it implies a falsehood: that decrying racism against Chinese individuals is a function of defending the PRC’s government. Very dangerous (and incorrect) to argue that one can’t oppose the regime and support individual people at the same time.
