First day of class at . Heavy snow on the ground. Down with the flu without a voice. I went to the lecture hoping to cancel. But the room full of students with curiosity gave me strength. Also, my magic hat helped. :-)

December was wonderful spending it in Dhaka, Kolkata, Vizag, Cox'sBazar and Chittagong, the tropical cities in south-east Asia. Ignored emails and Twitter completely and ate super hot spicy food, answered endless questions from my boys, and walked on the beaches with my wife.

Very worried about using simplistic pronoun patterns, crude speaking rate metrics, and facial movements to enforce their stereotypes to decide who gets hired. While has been tone-deaf, avoiding companies using their tech may help.

For a major deadline in the past, we decided not to submit any papers and yielded the time back to the students to enjoy with family. Try it. It works great to improve the quality of work and quality of life.

In graduate school, I was never sure whether the incredible branding of or the quality of the work is doing the trick. Post Ph.D., it was a very rewarding challenge to have our work stand on its own without relying on a brand.

And the best part for me was to bring my 8-year-old to the conference and explore the beautiful coastal city of Vizag together. The moderator gave him the responsibility of time keeper and he really enjoyed asking me stop as I went overtime in my speech.

As people struggle with my name, I often joke, "I wish I had an easier name like Ethan". And I am always Ethan at Starbucks. While reading scientific papers, I always encourage my students to highlight the authors and learn to say their names.

At the Nobel Museum—the most interesting object was the bike of Amartya Sen, laureate in Econ in 1998. His assistant lacked skills to work with infants in the rural areas. Sen, father of 4, used his bike to travel to the impoverished areas and finished the work himself.

This is national adoption month. Too many kids still need a family. I am eternally grateful to my birthmother for bringing me into this world, and to my family who adopted me into a lifetime of love. Please share how we all might support kids in need.
