Interested in science policy? We have a grant for that! Recipients receive funding to attend the Congressional Visits Day workshop in April. Includes science communication & advocacy training. Applications due Feb. 7!

“What’s the mechanism?” can be a really ridiculous question. When a truly novel observation is made, almost by definition, the mechanism is unknown (and what qualifies as a “mechanism”?). Asking scientists to wait YEARS before sharing an exciting observation is irresponsible.

As a first generation scientist, I was late to the game on scientific vocabulary. I feel like I'm constantly googling words when I'm reading a paper. My question is this: why is it that academic culture aims for exclusivity? Why isn't science more accessible?

Over the summer, the lab et al. read 's most excellent popgen-notes as a group. We all learned a lot. I mention this now because I made a (then) new Shiny app about linked selection (2nd link). (1/n)

Got an offer to interview at for the grad program! Definitely not one to brag about myself, but getting the first interview in the bag is an awesome feeling (and a huge relief)—the research dream is alive and well!! 💯💪🔥

After way too many (virtual) all-nighters than I’m willing to admit, I have successfully finished my first class on Computational Gemonics! I learned so much more compbio than I ever thought I could (Markov models aren’t just a buzzword to me now lol)! Onwards to the next one 💪

Scientists: 1960-70s: Hey, this thing could be a problem. 1980s: Climate change IS coming. 1990s: Seriously, humans are changing the climate. 2000s: Why aren't you taking action? 2010s: HELLO? 2019 Op-ed: Why didn't you scientists warn us?

Does HiC distinguish btwn homologous chromosome interactions? E.g., we know one X chromosome has a very different intra-chr and inter-chr interaction than the other. Is it assumed that both autosomal chromosomes have the same chr interactions?

It’s 2:30pm on a Tuesday. That means it’s time to stop & think about how crazy leafcutter ants are! Ready? Let’s start by just watching these Atta cephalotes cut up this leaf. Wow. Nice work ants.
