this is a tricky problem and i don't have any easy answer, which is why i'm asking (and also annoyed at folks who pretend to have an easy answer while sneakily avoiding saying what it's supposed to be)

oh this is a good starting point — fiction is built out of facts and it may not be clear which parts are which if the audience isn't already familiarhttps://twitter.com/AkinaAiyuki/status/1219339061388726272 …

actually the more i think about this the more i get mad that anyone invokes jaws as an argument against problematic ships or fiction or whatever. nobody went into jaws actively thinking shark attacks never happen but were completely swayed by one action movie

Sharks weren’t seen as something to so actively fear until Jaws, and that’s when people killing sharks en masse to “protect people” started
-
ahahaha oh my god, framing this as "protecting people" is incredible

I thought pretty much the same. They qualified it a bit later in the thread, but the point about "things you repeatedly consume become a part of you" also struck me as a weird follow up to,y'know, *Jaws.*
-
oh yeah i caught that too. things you consume repeatedly, like a single 70-minute movie, can have a lasting impact

having never experienced a pre-Jaws world, what *was* Jaws' effect on reality? are people just more afraid of sharks than before?
-
people think shark attacks are a serious concern (they're not) and have killed sharks preemptively
