add a check for if your character is colliding with an object on the feet maybe? if it is, then display this animation, and if not, show a different animation for the air.

it would be different depending on whether you're moving up or down, and now i have three copies of basically the same animation which makes me frown a bit

To make it work mid-air, make the character's animation very quick and linger on its end-frame, make the pose more exaggerated so it reads more immediately, and have the projectile move independently of the character.
