Thanks to Doug Jones and Willard Romney, I am choosing not to be cynical today.

The decisions a party makes in the primary (and the nominee makes in the general) *all* risk alienating cohorts of potential voters. Just b/c the kids at the next lunch table are loud about the risks of alienating them doesn’t mean they’re the most important group in the room.

If not Iowa or New Hampshire, the state that would best reflect the primary electorate for either party? Believe it or not...Illinois! Biggest spread of racial/religious/income/educational/age diversity, along with a mix of major metro areas, suburbs, exurbs, rural areas.

it’s very clear what the game is here step 1: openly rig elections step 2: shield the offender from political or legal accountability step 3: “win” the rigged election step 4: “We have a mandate from the American people."

It’s simple really. If the trial is rigged to keep hidden the most damming, most important, most relevant evidence, then it’s not a trial. Nor is it an acquittal. It’s a coverup. If this is what happens tomorrow, the Senate will be disgraced.

Just a complete disgrace and an incredibly dark day for American democracy. No one is going to save us from Trump and his corruption and destruction of the rule of law. Not Mueller. Not 51 Republicans. Not John Roberts. We have to save ourselves. We have 10 months. Get to work.

This was a daring question, but it teed up a softball for Schiff, and also put Roberts on notice that if he has an opportunity to force witnesses and does not do it, he and his court will be tarred. Mission accomplished on both counts I think, and very deftly.

You cannot be acquitted if you don’t have a trial. You don’t have a trial if you don’t have witnesses and documentation. If Republican Senators choose a cover-up, the American people and history will judge it with the harshness it deserves.

"You can't make this stuff up... The Justice Department, in resisting House subpoenas, is in court TODAY and was asked: If Congress can't come to the court to enforce subpoenas... what remedy is there? The DOJ lawyers response? Impeachment." -

I've said it before, but a reminder. Coercing foreign governments to harass your political opponents is a mid-point for an authoritarian who can't yet control domestic law enforcement. The final real goal is to get domestic law enforcement to target political enemies at his will.

I don't think people fully grasp the constitutional danger of this moment. If the Senate were to refuse to call relevant witnesses with direct testimony of grave presidential wrongdoing then we can no longer understand impeachment to be a genuine check on executive overreach.

I collected Obituaries of every Republican who voted for or against Nixon's articles of impeachment. Insight into how this Senate's historic votes—on whether to have a fair trial with witnesses and whether to acquit—will be remembered.

To my Republican colleagues who've complained that there's no new evidence in this impeachment trial: You voted more than ten times to block relevant witnesses and evidence. Don’t bury your head in the sand and then complain that it’s dark.

House managers laid out a devastating case against the President on Day 3. Trump must be held accountable for his assault on the Constitution and our democracy. No. One. Is. Above. The. Law.
