I've turned down 4 speaking opps in last 2 months because the current speakers (or past ones in the series) were almost entirely white and male. Organizers, pls do better. Invitees, ask people for their numbers; responses are always telling. If bad, decline or recommend others.

"or past ones" what does that have to do with it?

Trying to guess if you're likely to be the token.

Wouldn’t you be an important step in the right direction, though ?

Serious question: What if women and other POC are doing the same thing? If we all do this, the speakers will remain white men.

No offense meant but this is ridiculous. If you want less white people. Show up. Either way, it shouldn't be about identity, it should be about content.

But if we only go with a manel you are automatically missing some content and context. It’s important

Wouldn't you speaking be helping change that?

Actually a great way for someone who has been asked to speak but thinks their presence on a panel is likely to be unhelpful for increasing representation, they had a specific recommendation of someone from their field who ought to be heard from more.
