The logical thing to do would be to rename it SARS-CoV-1 and rename the associated disease COVID02 since it emerged in 2002. We can discuss the resulting Millennium Bug in 80 years' time.

In my group day-to-day we are calling them SARS-1 and SARS-2. If and when the field comes to its senses and does what it should have done from the outset, you can tell them you heard it here first.

It’s the fault of the IVTV committee. Several scientists tried to get them to cahange it (shorten it). Committee dismissed their plea.
