I wrote about the new coronavirus itself--where it came from, why it's behaving in the way it's behaving, how it infects and kills, and what the summer might bring. It's early days, of course, but this serves as a rough preliminary portrait of SARS-CoV-2.https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2020/03/biography-new-coronavirus/608338/ …

One odd and light consequence of calling the new virus SARS-CoV-2 is the number of frustrated virologists who have begun referring to the other SARS virus as "SARS-classic" or "original SARS", like it was some kind of soda.

"SARS the FIrst"? "SARS Senior?" I may start sliding those into stories just to see if they stick.

The logical thing to do would be to rename it SARS-CoV-1 and rename the associated disease COVID02 since it emerged in 2002. We can discuss the resulting Millennium Bug in 80 years' time.

Drink sars! Its sugar free and boosts your immune system. Ok... It causes morbidity and mortality worldwide, and makes shady promises...but thats not news when it comes to soda.

In my group day-to-day we are calling them SARS-1 and SARS-2. If and when the field comes to its senses and does what it should have done from the outset, you can tell them you heard it here first.😉

It’s the fault of the IVTV committee. Several scientists tried to get them to cahange it (shorten it). Committee dismissed their plea.
