Unlike most grazers, bison don’t track the waves of greenery that emerge in the spring. Instead, they ENGINEER those waves, intensifying the springtime greening and raising nutrient levels in the plants.https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2019/11/how-bison-create-spring/602176/ …

The thing that really blew my mind about this study is that bison influence the timing of spring greenery more powerfully than weather or environmental variables. They’re like an actual force of nature.https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2019/11/how-bison-create-spring/602176/ …

So think about what the North American spring would have been like before Europeans reduced 30-60 million bison to a few hundred. Or what it could be like again if the herds were restored and—crucially—allowed to migrate and graze freely.https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2019/11/how-bison-create-spring/602176/ …

No mention on the Indigenous peoples who considered/treated Bisons as part of their kin and who were targeted for extermination of both Bisons and Indigenous people?

It’s good to see Leroy Little Bear quoted and the Buffalo Treaty referneced in this piece. Our survival is tied to Buffalo.

Though it has to be said that our beliefs towards buffalo are not in the past tense. We exist today and have beliefs today.

Burrowing Owl reintroduction in Southern Interior of BC made a discovery back in late 90s When cattle were excluded from fields, owls didnt do as well as when cattle were rotated thru I have often wondered about Prairies, Bison & if there was a correlation to BUOW Extirpation

Wes Olson has presented on how the reintroduction of Bison to the prairies has brought back so much wildlife, and most importantly, burrowing owls!

And, you know, I'm kind of willing to bet you can't just throw cows at the problem to solve it. I bet the environment needs ACTUAL bison.
