Well this is awesome. Bacteria can coordinate their behavior by exchanging signals that reveal how many of them there are. But unexpectedly, VIRUSES can eavesdrop on those signals, to launch infections only when there are enough hosts around.https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2018/12/some-viruses-can-eavesdrop-their-hosts/578071/?utm_source=twb …

"[Viruses] are not even technically alive! They’re entirely different entities to bacteria, and yet they are intercepting and interpreting the same molecular messages. It’s not phrased in evolutionary terms. No things are eavesdropping anything. Passively receiving and reacting to emissions.

it might not be proper scientific, evolutionary terminology, but the tweet got people thinking and talking about science. Doesn't light hearted banter sometimes spark new ideas?

I just gave a Genetics question asking students to re-design lambda phage to go lytic at high cell density. Most of the students got it right too. Then I just saw this! Evolution wins every time.

I don’t know if I agree? Like. Viruses and bacteria are very different things but of course all life is interconnected. Doesn’t make them the same.

I don't think they necessarily have to be the same in this description. Kind of like differentiating between organelles and eukaryotic cells.
