One prominent study claimed that 55 percent of the ocean is fished. A team of critics say it's more like 4 percent. They both used the same data. Here's my piece on what happened, and why it reveals how hard it is to measure our impact on the world.https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2018/09/wait-so-how-much-of-the-ocean-is-fished-again/569782/ …

From my perspective, the choice of which scale depends on the intended use of results (ie lg management area overview vs small scale compliance gauging), and whichever is used, the meaning can be transparent so there is no ‘watering down’ of perceived utility of those results.

This is a solid take, and I appreciate the use of "watering down"

Really hit the nail on the head .."but the way we talk about it does matter.." - how data is interpreted, information is communicated should surely be done within the same remits of objectivity and transparency that wider science adheres / aspires to. Otherwise it's just advocacy

How did you write that without using the word “fishy”?

How much of the ocean "is affected by fishing." Open-ended terminology. This is how so much junk science gets into the media.

Great take. My problem with cherry picking the science (or in the grids) is public perception. Research how much of the US is paved by using grids the size of Rhode Island vs grids of 1 to 100 acres. you could claim the entire US was paved. The public knows better but in oceans ?

Fascinating article! 55% number is absurd, but it gets difficult to find a "real" number. And the issue is likely more than just numbers...

Great synopsis, reminded me of the importance of explaining and communicating the bigger picture, and not letting info get skewed.

Thanks, great text! What frustrates me: All this could have been avoided by a strict review in the first place, before publishing the paper in this magazine. I mean, come on, comparing data with different resolutions, this cannot be their quality standard. 😐

The scale of analysis is super important when comparing #fishing to other food provisioning systems. #DataMatter

isnt the real ? how much of the ocean supports large fish stocks to start with, regardless of how much man has cleaned out?

It´s simple, go to the beach and see if you can get a fish, for sure it's more than 50% fished.
