Woohoo! Passed my first bill of 2020. 221 YES votes ✊ What it does: 📣Shortens the length of time of bad marks on your credit report from 7 to 4 years. 📣Help us remove fraudulent schemes on our credit report. 📣Prevents medically necessary debt from being reported.

Hey ! I have a speech impediment. I block a lot on the first syllable of my name. No, I did not "forget" my name. I understand no one can know this from looking at me, but I implore y'all to be sympathetic to those of us who communicate in non-normative ways. (1/2)

Imagine a scenario in which the first-in-the-nation presidential caucus happened in a place that was as black or brown as Iowa is white. What do you think would happen?

And (like transparency) the livestream is useless unless people are looking! So please spread the word about the livestream to new and interested scholars, practitioners, activists, policymakers outside our current networks!

^This brings to mind the harms that "I don't see color" can bring. You can remove race but what about zip? Education? That and "I don't see sex" don't make models better: it causes other features to be leveraged in ways that are not immediately apparent.

Interesting point shared by Emily Black (FlipTest: Fairness Testing via Optimal Transport): Blinding models on sex doesn’t solve gender discrimination issues. Patterns can still be found in other features e.g. hair length.

Disclosing a model isn’t always helpful (or interpretable). *One* option is sharing a subset of features relevant to the decision. This can avoid trade secret concerns & promotes explainability—enabling people to understand how decisions were reached.

What a strong first panel on Accountability! Also love the discussion going on right now on stage. From calls to engineers to engage the communities where their algorithms are deployed based on use cases from Seattle, to a critical view on GDPR & public bodies
