ICFP is trying moderated questions via paper and slack. Complicates the job of the session chair!

Yesterday I saw one chair simply say, "These questions are too technical," and end the session. Possibly true, but how do I know?

I’ll be interested to see how it works. e.g. I wouldn’t miss “This is more of a comment than a question… *gives alternative talk*”

Agreed. Lots wrong with one-mike questions. But it's going to be a learning experience, I think.

In the SC meeting earlier, Kathleen suggested that maybe we now need two session chairs per session, with one just doing question curation.

Certainly the session chair needs help. Moderation was a mixed bag today. I saw questions on Slack that were later garbled.

And I asked a question on Slack, it was answered five minutes later, I deleted the question... and then the chair asked it! Need protocols!

(I mean the speaker answered it in the course of the talk five minutes after I first typed it in.)

Sharing the load seems a good plan. I hope this can work out - not that I’m there to see it in action, but I really like the idea overall.

Part of the reason
@lindsay proposed this was for people like you and her not here! But it can also benefit those present, I think.1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -
I might be making more use of it, but the reason I’m not there is also making me miss talks, alas! I’ll be there later this week though…
