I think the problem is that these student are in their fourth year and so by now they've worked out I'm not a proper lecturer :)

Another idea is to "make an example" of the bright students. Stress them out and isolate them. CULTIVATE THE RAGE

You need to build more stress in your students before you do stuff like that. Try grading on a competitive, exclusionary curve
